The SUV Surge: Analyzing India SUV Market Sales Trends and Consumer Preferences
Market Research Future reports indicate that India SUV market sales are experiencing robust growth, with the overall market projected to reach USD 19.48 billion by 2035. Mid-size SUVs dominate with 52% share, while Compact SUVs accelerate at 8.9% CAGR driven by affordability and growing middle-class purchasing power. This sales trajectory reflects a fundamental shift in Indian consumer preferences away from traditional sedans and hatchbacks toward SUVs.
The sales data reveals a market transformation. SUVs now account for a significant and growing share of total passenger vehicle sales in India, a dramatic shift from a decade ago when sedans dominated. Hyundai Motor India Limited reported that SUVs accounted for a record 71.8% of its domestic sales in July 2025, the highest SUV share since the company's inception. This statistic illustrates the magnitude of the shift and the importance of SUV offerings to manufacturer success.
The mid-size SUV segment, which includes models like the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, and Tata Curvv, represents the largest and most competitive category. In FY2025, only Creta, Grand Vitara, Seltos, Hyryder, Thar Roxx, Curvv, and Elevate crossed the 20,000-unit sales threshold, demonstrating both the popularity and the competitive intensity of this segment. The Hyundai Creta continues to dominate, maintaining its position as India's best-selling mid-size SUV.
New model launches have energized the market. Mahindra launched the 5-door Thar Roxx in September 2024, which entered the bestselling mid-size SUV chart in its first year with estimated sales of 37,834 units. Tata Motors launched the Curvv coupe-SUV in its electric variant in August 2024, followed by petrol and diesel variants in September 2024, achieving 34,019 units sold in FY2025. These launches demonstrate the appetite for fresh, differentiated products in the Indian market.
The electric SUV segment is emerging as a significant growth driver. Tata Motors launched its new electric SUV, the Nexon EV, featuring advanced battery technology and a range of over 500 km on a single charge. VinFast announced the launch of the VF7 electric SUV in India, scheduled for August 18, 2025. Maruti Suzuki announced the launch of the e Vitara electric SUV, scheduled for September 10, 2025. These launches signal the growing availability of electric options across price points.
Regional sales patterns reflect urbanization and income distribution. Metropolitan areas drive premium SUV sales, while tier-2 and tier-3 cities are driving volume growth in compact and mid-size segments. The growing middle class, expected to reach 600 million by 2030, represents the primary demographic for SUV ownership.
Challenges facing the market include rising interest rates, which affect affordability, and infrastructure constraints in some regions. However, the opportunities presented by rising disposable incomes, product innovation, and government support for the automotive sector suggest continued growth.
