How the preference system works in merit allocation
Knowing the preference allocation process followed by UPSC is vital for all candidates. Your final allocation preference shall be made based on the following factors: your merit and rank, your medical fitness, and your choices:
-
When you fulfil your first preference: if you achieve a good merit rank and satisfy the medical requirements for your first preference, you will get your main branch as an allocation(e.g., Air Force)
-
When medically unfit for first preference: if you are unable to fulfill the medical requirements of your first preference (i.e., vision and height requirements for a pilot), you are not out of the race. Rather, you will automatically be considered for your second or third preference, depending on the fact that whether you are medically fit for this branch or not.
-
When seats are filled up: if your merit rank is such that you cannot fulfil your first preference, then you are allocated the next preference branch where there are vacant seats left.

You must choose a branch that suits your academic qualifications, medical suitability, and preference towards either land, air, or sea activities. You need to review the criteria for qualification, contemplate what kind of lifestyle appeals to you, and then confidently submit your preferences. Apart from these aspects, there are other things that you should consider as well while making your decision, such as the scope for growth in your future career, training opportunities, and your compatibility with the branch you want to belong to.
